Getting Started

Who is this coaching for?

Young athletes managing Type 1 Diabetes alongside their sport, and the parents supporting them. Whether you're just starting out, newly diagnosed, or already competing regularly, sessions are built around wherever you currently are.

What can I expect from a coaching session?

A conversation, not a lecture. Sessions cover whatever's most useful — managing diabetes around training, preparing for matches, blood glucose management, motivation and confidence, or just talking through what an athlete or parent is finding difficult. It's mentoring based on Ellen's own lived experience as a professional footballer with T1D.

Does Ellen give medical or clinical advice?

No. Ellen isn't a medical professional, and sessions aren't a substitute for guidance from your diabetes care team. What she offers is real, lived experience of managing T1D at professional sporting level — practical, personal, and always alongside your existing medical care, not instead of it.

What age groups does Ellen work with?

There's no strict cut-off — Ellen works with young athletes across a range of ages and sporting levels. If you're unsure whether it's the right fit for your child's age or stage, get in touch directly and she'll be honest about whether it makes sense.

Sessions & Booking

How do I book a session?

Either message Ellen directly on WhatsApp, or fill out the contact form on this site. You'll choose a 30 or 60-minute session, pick a day and time that works, and leave a few details about what you'd like to cover.

What information do I need to provide when booking?

Your full name, contact number and email, your preferred day and time, and whether you'd like a 30 or 60-minute session. There's also a space to share anything you'd like Ellen to know before the session — the more context, the more useful the time together.

How long are sessions, and what do they cost?

Video call sessions are £30 for 30 minutes or £65 for 60 minutes. Public speaking at schools, clubs or events is priced individually — get in touch for a quote based on what you need.

Are sessions online or in person?

1-to-1 coaching sessions are held over video call, so they're accessible wherever you're based. Public speaking engagements at schools and clubs are in person.

What if I need to reschedule or cancel?

Just message Ellen directly — on WhatsApp or by email — as early as you can, and she'll find a new time that works for both of you.

Public Speaking & Events

Does Ellen speak at schools or clubs?

Yes. This actually started the whole business — after a speech at Ellen's old school, both pupils and parents wanted to talk to her further about managing sport and studies alongside T1D. She now speaks at schools, clubs and events on request.

What does a talk usually cover?

Ellen's own journey — from playing multiple sports as a kid, through academy football and a diagnosis at 19, to playing professionally and studying at the same time. Talks can be tailored to the audience, whether that's young athletes, parents, or a mixed group.

For Parents

How can I support my child through this?

Every family is different, but one thing Ellen often comes back to is balance — being involved without taking over, and helping your child build the confidence to manage things themselves over time. Sessions can involve parents directly, or focus on the athlete alone, depending on what feels right.

Will Ellen communicate with my child directly, or with me?

Whichever works best for your family. Some parents prefer to be part of every session, especially with younger athletes; others prefer their child has that space independently. Just let Ellen know your preference when you book.

Is this a replacement for our diabetes care team?

No — and it's not meant to be. Ellen's support sits alongside your child's medical team, not in place of it. Any changes to insulin, diet or medical management should always go through your own healthcare professionals.

About Ellen

What's Ellen's own experience with T1D and football?

Ellen was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at 19, while a student-athlete in the US. Less than a year later she signed her first professional contract with Leicester City. She's since made 54 appearances for Sunderland in the WSL2 and earned senior caps for Wales — all while completing a First Class Honours degree and a Masters.

Why did Ellen start T1D Player Support?

After speaking at her old school's end-of-year speech day about her own journey, both pupils and parents wanted to know more. Ellen realised she wasn't just someone who'd researched diabetes in sport — she was living it every day at professional level, and wanted to share that experience directly with others going through the same thing.
